2028 Ford Fathom™: What We Know So Far

Ford hasn’t published the full lineup yet, but the headline numbers are already out. Here’s the short version for shoppers near La Mesa.

Under $30K to Start

Starting MSRP of $28,350 with the standard-range battery. That makes it the most affordable electric vehicle Ford has ever announced.

Preorders Early 2027

Reservations open in early 2027. Let Sedano Ford know you’re interested and we’ll reach out the moment preorders go live.

Two-Way Power

Bidirectional AC power is built in, so the truck can send a projected 10 kW back to your home without a separate wall-mounted inverter.

BlueCruise Capable

Every Fathom ships with the hardware for next-generation BlueCruise hands-free highway driving, tied into Apple Maps.

Room for Five

Seats five adults and is projected to offer more passenger volume than a Toyota RAV4, plus a front trunk and an open bed.

Built in Kentucky

Assembled at Ford’s Louisville Assembly Plant on the all-new Universal EV Platform, the first vehicle to use it.

Performance

A Clean-Sheet Electric Platform

2028 Ford Fathom™ Aluminum Unicasting Structure

146 Parts Become Two

The Fathom rides on a pair of giant aluminum unicastings, one front and one rear. Those two castings replace 146 separate structural parts, trimming weight and improving energy efficiency. Ford has already cast more than 5,000 of them at its Shelbyville Technical Center, and each one is engineered for modular repairability.

2028 Ford Fathom™ Engineered for Efficiency

Engineered for Efficiency

Ford’s Universal EV Platform was designed from scratch around the battery, with aerodynamics tuned to stretch every mile. Official EPA-estimated range hasn’t been released yet, and we’ll update this page the moment Ford publishes it.

2028 Ford Fathom™ Standard-Range Battery

Standard-Range Battery

The base price gets you a standard-range pack. Ford has said the platform uses a 400-volt lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery system, a chemistry known for long cycle life and everyday durability. A larger battery option is expected to follow.

2028 Ford Fathom™ Charge Almost Anywhere

Charge Almost Anywhere

Platform prototypes carry a NACS charge port, the same standard used by Tesla Superchargers, which gives you access to the largest fast-charging network in North America right out of the gate.

Home Power

A Battery Parked in Your Driveway

2028 Ford Fathom™ Lights On When the Grid Goes Down

Lights On When the Grid Goes Down

A power outage doesn’t have to mean a dark house. With the available Ford Home Power Station and Home Backup Power Panel, the Fathom can keep your refrigerator, Wi-Fi, and lights running, quietly and without the fumes of a gas generator.

2028 Ford Fathom™ Charge Cheap, Spend Smart

Charge Cheap, Spend Smart

Time-of-use rates reward drivers who charge overnight. Fill the Fathom’s battery when electricity is least expensive, then let the truck feed your home during peak evening hours. It’s a simple way to take a bite out of your monthly utility bill.

2028 Ford Fathom™ Less Hardware, Lower Cost

Less Hardware, Lower Cost

Because the Fathom converts DC to AC onboard, you don’t need a bulky external inverter. Ford expects its new Home Power Station to cost about half as much as its first-generation bidirectional charger, and the backup panel to run at least 60% less than before.

Exterior

Still Under Wraps, Already Turning Heads

This isn’t a crossover with a cargo cover. The Fathom has an open bed for bikes, surfboards, mulch, and whatever else the weekend throws at you.

Frunk Up Front, Bed Out Back

With no engine to package, the Fathom gains a lockable front trunk in addition to its bed. Groceries ride up front, dirty gear rides in back, and the cab stays clean.

Tested in the Extremes

From desert heat to whiteout snow, Ford’s engineers are putting camouflaged prototypes through the full validation gauntlet before the first customer truck is built.

Interior

More Space Than You’d Guess

2028 Ford Fathom™ Seats Built From the Ground Up

Seats Built From the Ground Up

Ford’s interior team is developing the Fathom’s seating in-house, with a focus on real-world comfort rather than showroom flash. Full cabin photos arrive with the production reveal in 2027, and we’ll add them here the day Ford releases them.

Five Adults, No Squeezing

Four doors and seating for five, sized so the back row works for grown-ups and not just car seats.

Roomier Than a RAV4

Ford projects more passenger volume than a Toyota RAV4, which is generous space for a truck at this price.

Storage at Both Ends

A lockable front trunk for the things you want out of sight, plus an open bed for everything else.

Technology

Simple on the Surface, Smart Underneath

2028 Ford Fathom™ A Truck That Keeps Getting Better

A Truck That Keeps Getting Better

The Fathom runs on a new zonal electrical architecture that Ford is validating on lab benches before it ever reaches a truck. That foundation is what lets the vehicle add features and improve over time through software updates, instead of staying frozen the day you buy it.

Hands-Free Highway Driving

Every Fathom is BlueCruise capable. Ford’s next-generation hands-free system uses road-level data from Apple Maps for a smoother on-ramp-to-off-ramp experience on designated highways, so the daily commute feels a lot shorter.

Your Phone Is the Key

A Digital Key and Ford app remote control come standard, so you can lock, unlock, check charge status, and precondition the cabin from your phone. Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ compatibility are standard too.

Navigation Powered by Apple Maps

The Fathom is the first Ford to integrate Apple Maps directly into the vehicle’s large center touchscreen.

Natural-Language Directions

Turn-by-turn guidance that talks like a person, with real-time traffic and incident alerts built in.

Smart EV Routing

Plans charging stops along your route and preconditions the battery before you arrive so you charge faster.

Search and Place Cards

Find restaurants, trailheads, and chargers with detailed place cards and multiple routing options.

Safety

Confidence Comes Standard

2028 Ford Fathom™ Driver-Assist Technology

Driver-Assist Technology

The Fathom shares its sensor suite with Ford’s next-generation BlueCruise, which means the same cameras and radar that enable hands-free driving are watching the road around you on every trip. Ford will publish the full driver-assist feature list closer to launch.

2028 Ford Fathom™ Strength You Can't See

Strength You Can’t See

Those two giant unicastings do more than save weight. A single-piece structure means fewer joints and welds in the load path, and the cast sections are designed to be repaired in modules after a collision rather than replaced wholesale.

What does “Fathom” mean?

A fathom was originally the span of a person’s outstretched arms, later a unit for measuring water depth, and eventually a word for understanding something completely. Ford picked it to signal a truck built around how people actually live.
